The Comets took care of business on Homecoming coming away with a 42-0 victory over the Iroquois West Raiders. On the Comets 3rd place on offense Noah Frerichs took a double reverse and scored from 53 yards out to start the scoring. Caspary hooked up Frerichs later in the quarter for the first of his 4 touchdown passes and a 14-0 lead. Caspary hit Tommy Wellborn, Luc Blume and Riley Dowdy for Touchdowns as the Comets held a 35-0 halftime lead. Derrick Graham added a Touchdown run as well. The defense held the Raiders to 28 yards rushing and got its 4th shutout of the season.
The Comets football team moved to 8-0 after recording its 5th shutout of the season in a 35-0 win over the Watseka Warriors. The Comets started the scoring in the first quarter on a Caspary to Luc Blume Touchdown pass to go up 7-0. Early in the 2nd quarter Ben Toberman picked off a Warrior pass and ran it back in for a 14-0 lead that would hold up until halftime. Senior Running Back Derrick Graham had 118 yards on 16 carries and scored 3 touchdowns all in the 2nd half to put the icing on the game. Graham also had a team high 21 tackles. J.R. Caspary was 9 of 19 passing for 168 yards and a Touchdown. The Comets take on Momence next week on Senior night.
The Comets traveled to St Joe Ogden High School in their conference opener and came away with their 3rd consecutive shutout in a 27-0 win over the Spartans. After a scoreless first quarter the Comets struck first. Noah Frerichs picked off a SJO pass in their own territory and a few plays later J.R Capsary hit Frerichs for a Touchdown and a 7-0 halftime lead. Early in the second half Caspary found Luc Blume over the middle on a catch and run from 66 yards out and a Touchdown to go up 13-0. The Comets score twice more in the third quarter. Logan Podowicz made an acrobatic coach that earned him WCIA play of the week and a touchdown and Derrick Graham ran for the final score in the 27-0 win. Graham helped lead a strong defensive effort with 12 tackles 3.5 for loss. Ben Toberman recorded a game high 18 tackles and Brandon Schoon intercepted two Spartan passes and nearly had a third. The Comets will look to keep things rolling next Friday at home vs the St. Thomas More Sabers.
The Comets struck early and often in a 62-0 win over the Paris Tigers. The Comets opened up scoring on a 45 yard run by Noah Frerichs. Logan Podowicz then scored his first touchdown of the night on a screen from QB J.R. Caspary and formed an early 14-0 lead. Podowicz was not done though as he picked off a Tiger pass and returned it 35 yards for a 21-0 lead after one quarter. In the 2nd Quarter Running Back Derrick Graham started chewing up yards and scored twice in the 2nd period on the ground. Chris Garcia snagged a pass from Caspary for another Touchdown and Graham capped off a monster first half with an interception return for a 49-0 halftime lead. On the first play of the second half Ben Toberman scored on a 65 yard run and Zach Washington scored in the 4th quarter to cap the big win. Frerichs led the Comets with 95 yards rushing followed by Graham with 88 and Toberman with 65. J.R. Caspary was 5 of 8 passing for 74 Yards and 2 TDs. The Defense played their best game to date allowing just 2 first downs and 19 total yards of offense while picking off 3 passes and scoring 2 defensive touchdowns.
The Comets moved to 2-0 on the season with a 49-0 victory of the Salem Wildcats. The Comets scored first following a turnover of their own when Logan Podowicz returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after one quarter. The Comets got on the board again in the second quarter when J.R. Caspary hooked up with Chris Garcia from 15 yards out and extended the lead to 14-0 at the half. After a sluggish first half the Comets came out hot after the break. Derrick Graham scored on an 8 yard touchdown run. Then Caspary found Noah Frerichs for a 4 yard touchdown pass and then again on a short pass and run by Frerichs for 90 yards and another Touchdown to go up 35-0 after 3 quarters. In the 4th quarter Luc Blume scored on a one yard run and Garcia capped the scoring with a 40 yard touchdown run to put the icing on a 49-0 win. The Defense held the Wildcats to just 99 yards total offense and picked off 3 passes.
The Comets kicked off their 2013 season a date late after Friday nights weather forced the game to Saturday afternoon. The Comets ranked #5 in the preseason 2A poll started off slow allowing the Hawks to grind the ball down the field on an 18 play drive they took almost 10 minutes off the clock. The Comets defense bent but didn't break and stopped the Hawks from scoring. A 34 yard screen pass from J.R. Caspary to Luc Blume helped set up a short touchdown run by Derrick Graham for an early 7-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter a 65 yard TD run by Graham was called back and the teams exchanged punts. Caspary hooked up on the first of four touchdown passes hooking up with Ben Toberman on a 4th and 4 from 43 yards out and a 14-0 lead. The Comets came out strong in the 2nd half with a 14-7 lead. Caspary hit Noah Frerichs on a 54 yard touchdown pass, Logan Podowicz on a 47 yard touchdown pass and Riley Dowdy a 46 yard touchdown pass all in the 3rd quarter and rolled from there winning 35-14. Caspary was 11 of 17 passing for 279 yards and 4 TD passes. Noah Frerichs led the receivers with 4 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. Derrick Graha led all rushers with 59 yards on 12 carries as well as leading the defense with a game high 11 tackles including 8 solos and 4 tackles for loss. Next up for the Comets is a matchup with Salem High School at 2pm on Saturday.
The Comet football team hosted its annual 7 on 7 tournament Saturday July 27 and came away with a 5-0 record on the day. The Comets opened up play against Tremont who was almost a 2nd round opponent of the Comets last fall and came away with a 27-15 win. In game two Central took on Seneca from the Interstate 8 conference and won that contest 33-23. Round three saw the Peotone Blue Devils also from the I8 conference. The Comets cruised to a 35-18 win in that game. Conference rival Momence was up next for Central and the Comets did not disappoint as they won 30-21. The only thing keeping Central from a perfect day was Manteno High School who the Comets have played several times this summer. The Comets struck early and often to a big 41-13 win. Participating schools included Central, Iroquois West, Momence, Tremont, Seneca, Peotone, Manteno, Reed Custer.
On Saturday July 6th the Comets traveled to Urbana High School for their first 7 on 7 of the summer. The Comets opened up play against Rich South High School. Both teams started out very sluggish but the Comets got things going and held on for a win. In Round 2 action Central took on Argenta Oreana. The Comets lost a close one to the Bombers. Round 3 saw the Comets taking on Effingham High School. The Comets jumped out to a 24-0 lead and won easily. The 4th Round saw a familiar face in Conference rival St. Joe Ogden. It was an intense battle. Down 10-7 the Comets stopped the Spartans in time to get the offense one last chance. With time winding down J.R. Caspary hit Chris Garcia on a 33 yard touchdown for a 14-10 win. Round 5 featured the Rantoul Eagles who jumped out to a 7-0 lead but the Comets rattled off 24 straight points for a 24-7 win. Round 6 saw the host Urbana Tigers and sad to say it was all Tigers. The final game featured the Comets of Oakwood. The Central Comets finished the day strong with a easy win to finish 5-2 on the day.
